Melati Malay is a DJ, musician, vocalist and record collector who grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia – a melting pot of music, rhythm, culture and art.
Her love of music began as a performer – in 2009 she was signed by Carpark Records (Toro Y Moi, Beach House) and for the next decade toured the world as a producer and lead vocalist in eclectic pop group Young Magic.
She has DJ’d and performed at festivals and venues around the world, including The Liquid Room (Tokyo), Berghain Kantina (Berlin), Lowlands Festival (Amsterdam), Sugar Mountain Festival (Melbourne), Iceland Airwaves (Reykjavik), REWIRE Festival (Den Haag), Le Guess Who Festival (Utrecht), Simple Things Festival (Bristol) and Festival NRMAL (Mexico City). North American highlights include The Brooklyn Museum, The Ace Hotel, 015 Folsom, Soho Grand, Irving Plaza, The Fonda, The Fillmore, Webster Hall, Hopscotch Music Festival, The Music Hall of Williamsburg, and The Bowery Ballroom.
She has collaborated with and toured with musicians including UK trip-hop pioneer Tricky, TV On The Radio and Purity Ring. As a selector and collector, she has released eclectic mixtapes with London based artist Leif Podhajsky, and had her music and mixes featured in Interview Magazine, The New York Times, BBC and DAZED.
Melati’s deep musical interest spans across genres and eras, with lively sets that bridge afro-house, outernational funk, boogie and soul, with contemporary electronic music and Indonesian pop. She weaves memorable, thoughtful sets that excite, amaze, and leave the room electric.
